Public Speaking Making Public Announcements with a Foreign Accent Wrong: That same cruise director, to show his enthusiasm to get passengers in a good mood, talks rapidly and nonstop between thoughts. The usual poor sound of a public address system and his not easily understood accent makes his announcement almost impossible to understand. His announcements are near useless, most annoying, and a waste of time. Right: A cruise director on an upscale ship that caters to an American speaking tourist happens to be of Australian birth and upbringing. It is necessary to make many announcements over the public address system and at various gatherings of passengers. Knowing that he has a major accent he speaks slowly and very distinctly so that all passengers can easily understand him.
